Public Invited for Free Appraisals, Author Talk, Updated Gallery Unveiling
JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Jan. 18, 2019 — Miles Harvey, journalist and best-selling author of Painter in a Savage Land: The Strange Saga of the first European Artist in North America and The Island of Lost Maps: A True Story of Cartographic Crime, will be the keynote speaker at Mapping Our Past, an all-day affair at the Main Library Jan. 26. This year’s annual event celebrates the Lewis Ansbacher Map Collection and the renovated Jordan and Shirley Ansbacher Gallery, which houses the newly framed Le Moyne/De Bry Collection of engravings.
Mapping Our Past is made possible through the generosity of the Lewis and Sybil Ansbacher Family Foundation and the Jordan and Shirley Ansbacher Family Foundation. The event is free and open to the public. A reception with refreshments will be held following the gallery unveiling.

Mapping Our Past – Schedule of Events
10 a.m. – 1 p.m. – Antique Treasures
Local antique appraisers will offer free, on-site evaluation of antique treasures in the Jax Makerspace. Limit two pieces per household. You must have a Jacksonville Public Library card in good standing; you may sign up for a library card at the event.
Between 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Special Collections staff will give personalized tours of the Morris Ansbacher Map Room.
1 p.m. – The Mysteries of Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues
Keynote speaker Miles Harvey will shed light on Jacques Le Moyne, the French artist, mapmaker and explorer who gave us the first European look at Native Americans in what is now Florida. Le Moyne’s drawings are the basis for the Le Moyne/De Bry Collection of engravings.
2:30 p.m. – Gallery Unveiling and Reception
View the recently reframed Le Moyne/De Bry Collection in the updated Jordan and Shirley Ansbacher Gallery. Refreshments will follow the unveiling.
