Stellar Summer Reading Stats 2019!

Summer Reading Stats, Jacksonville Public Library, A Universe of Stories

The Results Are In...

A little bit of reading each and every day seriously goes a long way, and you can see that in our Summer Reading Program 2019 stats. This summer, we invited children, teens, and adults to embark on a journey into A Universe of Stories. We read stellar books, enjoyed out-of-this-world programs, and successfully stopped the summer slide!

We had more than 58,000 people participate in our Summer Reading Program– that's almost enough to sell out TIAA Bank Field! If you add up the total number of days that each participant read for 15 minutes, it's equals almost 150,000 days. That adds up to 5 years and 3 months of nonstop reading. That means no eating, no sleeping, and definitely no bathroom breaks! 5 years and 3 months of nonstop reading would be enough time to read the Top 12 most popular book series 110 times, and then some, or to watch everything (and we do mean everything) on Netflix 1 1/2 times.

A Big Thanks to You!

So thank you to everyone who participated in our Summer Reading Program, A Universe of Stories. Together, we helped children in the Jacksonville community prevent the summer slide and stay intellectually engaged while out of school.

Just two or three months without reading during the summer can harm a student's reading development, whereas just one month of reading can improve a student's reading proficiency. By the end of fifth grade, students who don't read during the summer fall nearly two years behind. Also, low-income students often lack access to intellectually engaging opportunities, and are therefore more likely to fall behind their peers. Your support of our Summer Reading Program gives every child in Jacksonville the chance to build strong reading skills and exceed in academics!
