Chris Gabbard is a local author and UNF professor who recently published his first book, A Life Beyond Reason: A Father's Memoir. It's an incredibly poignant story about his son, August, whose life began and ended with medical malpractice.
What Gives Life Meaning?
A Life Beyond Reason provides a raw, first-hand exploration of the question, "What gives life meaning?" An error in the delivery room left Chris Gabbard's son, August, profoundly mentally and physically handicapped. Throughout the book, Dr. Gabbard recounts both the joys and difficulties he faced while caring for his son. August's existence defied all of Dr. Gabbard's previous notions of a meaningful life, and led him on an existential journey as both a father and an academic.
A New Understanding of Enlightenment
Chris Gabbard was once a scholar entirely devoted to the Age of Enlightenment and a firm believer in logic and reason. However, caring for his son and experiencing the immense love and joy that radiated from August led to a radical shift in Dr. Gabbard's understanding of rationality, fatherhood, and the meaning of life. We sat down with Chris Gabbard on the latest episode of Completely Booked to discuss A Life Beyond Reason. It's a story that often goes untold, so it was an honor to talk with him first-hand and hear his touching story. Listen to the podcast below:
