Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809. Suprisingly influential on American literature as we know it today, Poe accomplished many firsts in literary history. Not only was he the first American author to pen short stories, he popularized detective fiction by writing the earliest examples. Poe’s detective stories influenced Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes novels. Additionally, Poe was the first American author to make a living solely through his writing.
