What makes a good library great? Without question, it is the support the library receives from private citizens who understand and value the essential role a library plays in the life of the community.

The Rest of the Story

The Florida Times-Union published an article on Sept. 21 titled “Library down to last page in budget: Patrons could be final chance for system to avoid big cuts.” While it was accurate and we appreciate the Times-Union bringing the library’s budget crisis to the attention of readers, the figures in the accompanying chart were based on Fiscal Year 2009 data contained in the Capacity Plan Study by Godfrey’s Associates.

Library Faces Significant Budget Cuts

The Jacksonville Public Library faces a significant reduction in staffing, service hours and materials in Fiscal Year 2013 if the City Council approves the $4.66 million budget cut requested by Mayor Alvin Brown. He will present his budget to the City Council July 16; the council will discuss and debate the budget this summer, with a final vote due by Sept. 29.

Under the proposed budget:

Mayor's budget includes $2.9 million cut to libraries

Mayor Alvin Brown presented his Fiscal Year 2014 budget to the City Council yesterday.  Faced with a $64 million shortfall, departments citywide have been required to take significant cuts and that includes the Jacksonville Public Library.  The library’s budget as submitted by the mayor to the Council would be $31,420,192. This reflects a reduction of $2,896,659 from the current year, and is $517,801 more than the cut the Administration requested in June.

In the very early morning hours of Sept. 24, the City Council approved the Fiscal Year 2015 budget for the City of Jacksonville. After much debate, the Council voted to restore the previously approved budget lapse, which for the library would have meant $349,638 less to spend next year. Unfortunately, the across-the-board cut to overtime and the 10 percent reduction in the part-time budget remains.
