A journal of Florida History published four times a year by The Florida Historical Society. This link, provided through the Publications of Archival Library and Museum Materials (PALMM) site, provides access to all Florida Historical Quarterly issues available online through the Florida Heritage Collection. If you click on "Browse Issues", a list of issues will be generated starting with the most current available and then working back to the first. There is also a search function at the top of the page which should help you find specific articles on topics of interest.

The Olustee Battlefield State Historic Site commemorates the largest Civil War battle in Florida. This site offers detailed information not only on the battle itself, but also on the units that were involved. Strategy, tactics, biographies and pictures of key participants, as well as papers, diaries and reminisces, are also highlighted here.

The information contained in these web pages was adapted from the temporary exhibit "Florida in the Civil War," displayed at the Museum of Florida History from December 1997 to May 1998. Maple Leaf Civil War Shipwreck

In the early morning darkness of April 1, 1864, a Union Army transport, the Maple Leaf, returning from Palatka and bound for Jacksonville, struck a torpedo off Mandarin Point and sunk in 25 feet of water. This site is devoted solely to the ship, its history, and archeological efforts to raise artifacts from the wreck. Photographs, a bibliography and articles pertaining to the Maple Leaf specifically and the Civil War on the St. Johns River, are also included.

Fort Caroline National Monument

Created to memorialize the Sixteenth Century French effort to establish a permanent colony in Florida.
Kingsley Plantation

Located on Fort George Island, named for Zephaniah Kingsley, who operated the property from 1813-1839. The site includes the plantation house, a kitchen house, a barn, and the ruins of 25 of the original slave cabins.
Fort Clinch State Park

The site, on Amelia Island at the entrance to the St. Mary's River and the Cumberland Sound, has been occupied by various military troops since 1736. A pentagonal brick fort with both inner and outer walls, Fort Clinch was a safe haven for blockade runners during the Civil War. Briefly occupied by Confederate forces, its recapture by Federal troops in early 1862 gave the Union control of the adjacent Georgia and Florida coasts.
Castillo de San Marcos National Monument

The Castillo de San Marcos, built 1672-1695, served primarily as an outpost of the Spanish Empire, guarding St. Augustine, the first permanent European settlement in the continental United States, and also protecting the sea route for treasure ships returning to Spain.
Fort Matanzas National Monument

This Spanish outpost fort was built in 1740-1742 to guard the Matanzas Inlet and to warn St. Augustine of British or other enemies approaching from the south.
Timucuan Ecological & Historic Preserve

The 46,000 acre Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve was established to protect one of the last unspoiled coastal wetlands on the Atlantic Coast, and to preserve historic and prehistoric sites within the area.
