NEA Big Read/JaxReads Book to Movie: The Namesake

Join us as award-winning filmmaker Mira Nair brings the book by Jhumpa Lahiri to life! "The Namesake" tells a story that is the story of all immigrant groups in America: Parents of great daring arriving with dreams, children growing up in a way that makes them almost strangers, the old culture merging with the new. Rated PG-13 for sexuality/nudity, a scene of drug use, some disturbing images and brief language. NOTE: Join us for the NEA Big Read Finale featuring filmmaker Mira Nair on Saturday, March 11 at 1 p.m. at the Main Library.

Jax Reads/NEA Big Read Finale: An Afternoon with Mira Nair

Join us for a presentation and interview with award-winning filmmaker Mira Nair. The interview will be led by Parvez Ahmed, Ph.D. A skilled director, Mira Nair is equally adept talking to an audience; she began her career in front of the camera, not behind it. With sophistication, she discusses the craft of filmmaking as well as the issues she so passionately explores in her films: the tug of competing worlds felt by millions of immigrants, and ways to bridge the gap between cultures, races and genders.
